EVERSHOT BAKERYS' HISTORY

There has been a Bakery in Evershot for over one hundred and fifty years however it was always a very small affair serving perhaps just this Village for many years.

The growth of Evershot Bakery started in the seventy’s with the round’s becoming less cost effective, with the ever-increasing price of petrol.

It was at this time that the owners bought their first shop in Chard, the rounds were stopped and the wholesale side increased with the small Village shops being the main target area, A shop in Beaminster was added and soon the Lyme Regis shop was to follow. At this point the growth stopped for a number of years until 1995 when the owners sold the business to the present owners.

We have since then re-organised the wholesale customer base, still with the small Village shops to the fore, also Farm Shop’s, restaurants, pubs, factory canteens, and sandwich companies were added to the list that can be found here

For well over a hundred years there has been A Bakery in Evershot producing the quality and flavours that people remember from their childhood. We still produce handmade products in a time-honoured way; most of our process’s haven’t changed from the days when time was the secret ingredient that gave our products the distinct look and taste that says quality.

To this day our lines are still hand made by craftsman bakers to the highest quality with the best ingredients we can buy

BACKGROUND

The background to the Bakery is a little bit of a grey area as records can only trace back to the late 1800’s and most of the history we have is only from people’s fading memories of things that they have been told.

Therefore the history as we know it is really only hearsay.
The Bakery has been owned before us by;
Mr & Mrs Samways
Mr Dare
Mr Meech
Before Mr Meech, we believe a Christine Meech ran the bakery after her father or son died but we have not been able to find out which.

I am sure there were others before Mr Meech but he is the oldest that we have heard stories of. One of his old staff told me that the Bakery used to just make bread, but on Wednesdays you could also buy buns. In those days it was probably only serving Evershot, Melbury Osmond, Melbury Bubb, Melbury Sampford and Rampisham.
He also told me that his first job of the day which was at 5 o’clock in the morning was to feed the horse, very important because without the horse nobody would have had any deliveries.
Mr Samways told me that his first job of the day when he worked for Mr Dare was to get a wheelbarrow full of coke (coal) to stoke up the oven. This must have been rather a messy affair and I am glad that today all our ovens are now fuelly by electric. The days before the building was a bakery the older people of the village tell me that it was a small school for girls of very good reputation for the wealthy people of the area.

We still have not had time to research and find a definite date when the bakery changed from being a girl’s school, but it was many years ago.
